Tap into your favorite fandoms and stories to boost your mental well-being! Geek & Grow is a three-part workshop series that explores the intersection of pop culture and mental health. From fairy tales to horror films to online communities, we’ll dive into how the things we geek out about can help us heal, grow, and better understand ourselves.

Buc's S. P. E. A. K.
Thursdays 2:00pm - 3:00pm (Dates - 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15)
Led by Zara Taylor, and held in the Culp Center Room 211B
Bucs S.P.E.A.K. is a 4-week psychoeducational workshop aimed at students who experience
social anxiety to learn how to effectively advocate for themselves and set boundaries.
Group members will learn how to manage interpersonal relationships and communicate
assertively. Anyone can attend one or more sessions, but participants will get the
most benefit from all 4 events.
- Session 1: All about social anxiety (discussion of ‘normal’ anxiety vs SAD, symptoms, epidemiology, and use of CT-SAD as first-line evidence based treatment for it)
- Session 2: behavioral exercises for treatment of SAD (exposure hierarchies, ABC model, identifying social anxiety triggers, importance of ‘avoiding avoidance/safety bx’
- Session 3: Assertiveness Training (Based on Assertiveness training Workbook/ “When I say ‘no’ I feel guilty by Manual J Smith)
- Session 4: Interpersonal skills training (Based on DBT interpersonal effectiveness skills)
